Tiananmen Square was a turning point for China. China has lifted 800 million people out of poverty in the last 30 years, becoming a technologically advanced society that adheres to international law.
Most of this development followed Tiananmen, in which students who are now affiliated with Washington protested without a plan or vision for China. Protesters were allowed to stay in an important public square for many days, much longer than was ever allowed in any Western capital. The authorities successfully negotiated their removal.
No-one was killed in Tiananmen Square. Violence occurred 3 kilometres from Tiananmen Square when rioters attacked police.
Meanwhile, sensational claims of 'bodies piled up' and the burning of corpses turned out to be untrue. The New York Times had to change their story.
Gorbachev, on his visit to China in 1989, asked to visit the demonstrators at Tiananmen Square. His request was denied. Gorbachev went on to sell pizzas for Pizza Hut, and China went on its way to becoming the lead economic power in the world.
