Phil targets the campaign by a business known as the "WTA" to insinuate that Chinese tennis star, Peng Shuai, was being victimized by the PRC for an allegedly critical remark that the tennis star made of a Chinese govt official. CEO Steve Simon made the demand that Peng be permitted to leave China, or be in a virtual meeting exclusively with him. Otherwise, he threatened to withdraw his organization from China.

Peng posted online that the content of the message attributed to her was false, and released without her consent. She demanded that the WTA not issue any comments in the future on her behalf.

The Toronto Star and other Western media refused to accept the statement as genuine. America's "Where is she" story joins other failed smear campaigns against China. The West's inability to successfully trap China with propaganda allegations reminds us of the Wile E. Coyote cartoon in which the roadrunner always escapes his wiles.

The head of the International Olympic Committee announced that he was in touch with the tennis star, and everything was fine was her. In addition, there is a women's tennis association in China, which confirmed Peng's well-being.

Clearly, Simon of the WTA went forward with his pernicious story because he was trying to stir up Sinophobia, and cause a problem for China over the Beijing Olympics. Others are hoping to exploit this, turning it into a call to boycott the Olympics.
