Government, we are told, is our enemy and “big government” is incompatible with economic growth. Rejecting what seemed a solid past consensus, the right wing wants to roll back the achievements of the New Deal, and to close the door on a federal universal single-payer health system. How can we restore the public sense that government is 'us', and that it is through government that we solve our national problems?
