Long Island communities have responded to the breast cancer epidemic with inspiring efforts. The Island's breast cancer organizations provide assistance to the women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and their families. In addition to the support activities, many of the groups are now conducting an impressive educational outreach focused on prevention. Donna Jurasit, Executive Director of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, describes how her group educates on risk reduction. They start speaking with young children about the presence of chemicals in our surroundings and the benefit of knowing what chemicals are damaging to health. In this knowing of the chemicals there is the power to choose healthier foods, body care products and household cleaning products. Cancer prevention education focusing on reducing exposure to chemicals and agents that cause cancer is growing stronger every day. We have good reason to be hopeful that sometime in the future cancer will be a very rare disease. Honor to the people of Long Island for their leadership in reducing cancer burden. Honor them for their compassion, their clear thinking on prevention and their hard work.
