Childhood cancer is an overwhelming diagnosis that affects everyone close to the child and their family. Connorâs Heroes is a non-profit that addresses the practical, emotional, and social needs of children with cancer and their families, providing support for the ~60 patients who are diagnosed and treated in Richmond each year. There are several ways for individuals and groups to volunteer: packing Heroesâ Bags and Backpacks (filled with distracting fun toys for the kids and helpful vouchers for the familyâs day-to-day errands), delivering gifts or decorating rooms for kids at Masseyâs Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and mentoring patients and their siblings as Superheroes and Sidekicks. Upcoming endeavors include a care calendar to outsource basic tasks (like cooking meals, running errands, or mowing the lawn), to friends, families and volunteers. Connorâs Heroes has touched hundreds of lives and eased the practical burden of coping with pediatric cancer treatment by providing social support.
