This biographical documentary is centered around the life of Jan Janszoon, a 16th century Dutch corsair who eventually became a North African pirate. Throughout the story the documentary stops at different historical events. We talk about the Moriscos of Spain, the Sack of Baltimore, the piracy in Ireland and North Africa, the first crusades, the kingdom of Jerusalem, The knights of Malta, the independent Moroccan pirate city of Salé and much more.
It’s a 5 parts documentary:
Part 1: We start by discovering who is Jan Janzsoon and how he went from being a Dutch corsair to a Barbary pirate. We also learn what exactly is the difference between a pirate and corsair
Part 2: In this second part we learn who are the Moriscos and why were they kicked out of Spain. We’ll also continue Jan Janzsoon’s journey throughout North Africa and see how he became the first admiral of the independent Moroccan pirate city of Salé.
Part3: In this third part we continue Jan’s journey and see how he was almost killed after being tricked by a Spanish ship. We also see how he was treated by the Dutch authorities when he went back to the Netherland. Finally we learn more about the European slaves of North Africa.
Part4: In this 4th part, we learn about the two major attacks that Jan did in Europe. We learn about an Icelandic law that legalized the killing of Turks up until the 1970s, and then we go through the history of the Irish city of Baltimore and learn about its booming pirate business that attracted English settlers.
Part5: In this final part, we discover who are the Knights of Malta and how Jan found himself in the middle of the historic animosity between the Knights and the Ottomans. We see how the knights managed to capture Jan, and finally we learn how Jan’s journey ended and how he died.
