In prior installments of this TUC Radio series you heard from physicists, experts on artificial intelligence, nuclear winter, and on weapons in space as well as foreign policy analysts such as Noam Chomsky. When Mike Lofgren gave his talk he rightfully began by saying that this was going to be something completely different. He pointed to the Deep State and the merger of US corporations and the government as causes for the danger of a nuclear war in our time. Â
Mike Lofgren is a former congressional staff member who served on both the prestigious House and Senate budget committees. He retired in 2011 and began writing about his experiences. His initial article as a private citizen, Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult, received over a million views on Truthout.com. Lofgren expanded on that article in his book, The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted.
Since then, he has written numerous articles published in The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, The Huffington Post, and other publications.
This program contains a short clip of a Bill Moyers' interview in 2014. A year after that interview Mike Lofgren took the stage at the NY Academy of Medicine. He was one of the 20 plus speakers at the two day symposium on the Dynamics of Possible Nuclear Extinction organized by the anti nuclear campaigner and physician Dr. Helen Caldicott.
