President Erdogan has led his country on a zig-zag course, confusing both friend and foe.

Turkey is a NATO country but gets little respect from its American and European allies. Erdogan himself is a volatile personality. Recently he made up with Israel, offered an apology to Russia and word has spread that he is interested in normalizing relations with Syria. The latter point would put the Turkish president at odds with Saudi Arabia. It is no wonder then that Zafar Bangash had much to say about some sections of the Turkish military possibly contemplating a coup.
