Interview
William Hartung, arms control expert
 Jeff Blankfort  Contact Contributor
Aug. 10, 2016, 1:21 p.m.
Blankfort speaks with Hartung about his article last year on Obama being the all-time White House foreign arms salesman and how little concern the public and Congress has shown about it; Hartung points out the death, destruction and human rights violations caused by Saudi Arabia which has used its own record purchases of weapons under Obama in bombing Yemen with no concern for civilian casualties and for intervention in Bahrain to suppress democratic protests; Blankfort notes that Hillary Clinton was his Sec. Of State and helped to facilitate sales to the Saudis and other foreign donors to the Clintons' Foundation. Hartung suggests that Clinton's continuance of Obama's policies will only be limited by the ability to use the weapons by countries that have already bought them. He notes that Al Qaeda and ISIS have benefited from US weapons that have been sent to Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere and then captured by jihadi groups or sold to them by US allies. He describes how the US has involved a number of countries in paying for the over budget and controversial F-35 next generation jet whose final costs are estimated at $1.4 trillion. He also expresses concern that Obama administration transferred sales of dangerous small arms from the State Dept. to the Commerce Dept. where what the buyers do with the weapons is trumped by the desire to sell them about which human rights groups will have less knowledge and access to it. He expresses concern over the likely proliferation of weaponized drones to states that are likely to use them on their own populations or sell them to other countries. And more.
