Former Marine, Vincent Emanuele, explains how he came to activism and a radical understanding of the destructiveness of US Imperialism without the traditional Marxist background that many in the Left experienced. From a working class background on Chicago's south side he starts by explaining how he ended up in the military. He has written widely on his experience in Iraq and has been organizing in the anti war and social justice movements since leaving the Marines. The leading edge of resistance to Imperialism is found he says in the organizing being done to stop the racist police killing of blacks and the blocking of oil pipelines organized by Native peoples who are challenging the destruction of indigenous culture and planetary life itself, which is the basis of Capitalist "development". He suggests how Open University of the Left might expand its activities to include members of those movements to invigorate its programing in the changing landscape of resistance.
