From the first days of the Cuban revolution Fidel Castro lived up to his promise that all Cubans would become literate so they could acquire all the knowledge and culture found in the world. And in the earliest years Fidel sent Cuban educators to Algeria to assist that newly independent country bring literacy to the poor.

These steps set the foundation of a society that could cope with hurricanes and imperialism.
