We hear from Phoebe Holmes and Sion Williams from Bristol Friends of the Earth about their campaign to stop pollution of the citys air which, they estimate, is 297 deaths per year associated with air pollution in Bristol. Some areas of Bristol, notably Rupert Street and Parson Street, have levels of NO2 emissions from vehicles that regularly exceed EU limits. Wider areas around the Centre and M32 also have high pollution levels which cause health issues and statistically significant reduction in life expectancy. These typically most affect those less well off who live next to busy traffic. Diesel vehicles are the worst for polluting emissions but petrol vehicles produce them too. Having witnessed the failures of existing authorities to protect the children of this nation, and having seen the loss of confidence in the official enquiry, we have concluded that ordinary Scots must stand up to this challenge. The resignations from the official enquiry, and the governmental interference cited as reasons for those resignations, were the last straw.
