Human Rights Rally ahead of the refounding conference of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression in Chicago.
Chicago is the fulcrum of a movement to bring racist policing to heel; to end police impunity and to implement democratic community control; the who, the what and how police interface with people in their communities and to plan for abolition. In Chicago the campaign is called CPAC, Civilian Police Accountability Council. With its roots in 1619 when people transported in chains to labor in the US were organizing to be free of those chains, as their decedents today fight to end the crimes committed by racist police on themselves and community, in their demand to exercise their democratic right to control over the policing of their communities and an end to police impunity.
The CPAC movement has changed the political landscape in Chicago. Following the last election, 40% of the Chicago City Council support the Ordinance that would implement it.The coalition behind it has won historic gains for survivors of police torture and judicial complicity, both at the city and State level. It forced the system to charge and prosecute the cop who murdered teenager Laquan McDonald in spite of the smears and political bullying of the racist Fraternal Order of Police.
While no person has yet to be prosecuted for the FBI directed, Chicago police department staffed assignation of Black Panther Fred Hampton just 50 years ago this December, Chicago's real estate, investor and political elites would like people to forget their complicity in that past act of State terrorism that protected their class and financial perks, but as expressed at this rally and the conference that followed, that's not gonna happen.
