Tonight, as we near the 61st anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, which burst forth upon the world on January 1 1959, Back in the USSR pays tribute to the men and women who made the first socialist revolution in the Western Hemisphere possible. These brave comrades of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, from Haydee Santamaria to Vilma Espin to Harry "Pombo" Villegas, were the people who would fundamentally challenge the legacy of colonialism, slavery, and patriarchy in Cuba. In doing so they were forced to confront capitalism and empire head-on, leading to the rise of a new country that has been a beacon of hope to those struggling for liberation all over the world ever since. This is our final episode of 2019, happy new year comrades and friends!
