Ignacio Chapela and co-researcher David Quist's 2001 discovery of transgenic DNA in traditional maize landraces in Oaxaca, Mexico shocked traditional farmers and the biotech industry alike. The resulting controversy has culminated in Chapela's loss of tenure at UC Berkeley in extraordinary cirumstances. Ignaciao Chapela spoke to Adam Breasley of the Food Fight collective last Thursday, on the eve his last official class.
