Your support is essential if the service is to continue, there are bandwidth bills to pay every month and failing disk drives to replace. Classic broadcast from 1965 by radio's great humorist-satirist-storyteller, Jean Shepherd. Condensed by K.D.
With wit and humor, Shepherd reflects on adolescent psychology ... on being "shot down" ... on traumatic experiences ... and on the absurd prose on the back of packages--notably Official World's Fair Toothpicks. Then he tells a story from his childhood: how he snuck into a Ukrainian-American picnic, pretended to speak Ukrainian, and--to his later regret--consumed 17 hamburgers.
Originally broadcast on WOR AM-FM on April 1, 1965. Original recording courtesy of Radio Veronica. This 45-minute recording is available on (though not easily extracted from) radio4all.net--see r4as note at top of page.
This is the fourth of five Jean Shepherd broadcasts condensed and aired again on New World Notes. A search on "Jean Shepherd" should locate the other four.
New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "suspicious gaze") of WWUH-FM, a community service of that beacon of light in darkest Connecticut, the University of Hartford.
You can download this installment of New World Notes--in MP3 and other formats--also from The Internet Archive (www.archive.org). The page with the download links is here: https://archive.org/download/NWN580JeanShepherdHamburgerB192k
