A discussion of contemporary American attitudes to death and dying.
Producer: Andrew Zimmerman Uploaded by: Andrew Zimmerman
Since the Columbine High School massacre in April, questions are again being raised about our violent culture. We hear renewed calls for gun control and increased school security. Yet even though we see hundreds of deaths each year, on movies and television, most Americans still have a difficult time talking about death and dealing with the loss of a loved one. In this program we speak with students from Littleton, Colorado, and the University of Kansas to discover contemporary attitudes toward death in America's youth. What we find are not the disaffected, empty lives that the mass media likes to portray, but young people who think critically about the violence in our society, and see personal change as the first step in dismantling the American culture of death.
