The older archives (>10 years old) have been substantially recovered -- more than 23,800 files' worth -- and are now reachable through the search engine and via file download. Email here if you have any questions.
Your support is essential if the service is to continue, there are bandwidth bills to pay every month and failing disk drives to replace. Volunteers do the work, but disk drives and bandwidth are not free. We encourage you to contribute financially, even a dollar helps. Click here to donate.

0316 am 'Get This' news
author: shrike
Summary of the KBOO am news for Thursday, March 16th
1. PGE wants an 8.9% rate hike. (A 'hike' is exactly what I wish PGE would take.). Enron lite will probably get whatever it wants from a populace blasted flat by work and entertainment and just not interested in 'polly-ticks'.
2. Portland city commissioners have voted to subpoena financial documents belonging to PGE as part of an investigation into the utility's rates. (see above)
3. A KBOO special: Oregon's stake in the war is higher than its been since WWII. But wait! There's more! Big stake, small tech: This is nanotechnology applied to war machinery research and development. The DoD is creating a terrifying new world of 'chip-emplanated' super soldiers as well as ways of tracking people with implanted nanochips.
4. Craig Rosebraugh has been released from his subpoena to appear today before a grand jury. The new date is august 17th. This means that the rally in his support planned in Eugene is off - at least until August. (Makes one wonder: is the government still working on the evidence?)
5. In Washington State, a Republican Representative has jumped ship. Rodney Tom says that suburban moderates are increasingly disenchanted with hardline Republicans.
6. There was another community meeting in Coos Bay focused on economic development plans for the S. Coast. The latest idea results from the discovery of natural gas reserves in the area. Trouble with that is there are side effects from getting the stuff out. This involves draining water from coal beds which involves contaminating streams and fresh water aquifers. On the plus side the size of accidental explosions is somewhat smaller... .
7. Debate on the budget bill that would allow drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge has been postponed again. John Kerry and Maria Cantwell are sponsoring an amendment that would stop the drilling. Why not call up Ron Wyden and ask him why he wasn't one of the amendment's sponsors?
8. The Bush Family Flying Circus is rolling across the country - working without a net - drumming up support for the raw aggression of preemptive strikes.
9. A third Democratic Senator - not Ron Wyden - is backing Russ Feingold's resolution to censure the Prez for illegality authorizing domestic spy programs.
10. Hookers For Jesus - no, wait, I mean House Republicans have launched an election year PR campaign showcasing new ethics rules.
11. US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is worried about the size of the US budget deficit - and you should be too.
12. Here comes the big vote to up the national debt limit (picture the ad slogan for this one: Tight close-up on Bush : "I upped the debt limit!" (camera pulls back revealing Bush's middle digit) "So up yours!")
13. The US is sending more troops and way more bombs to Iraq.
14. The Administration has released recently declassified documents collected in Iraq by intelligence agents during the invasion's early days. The documents are in Arabic and they say whatever the admin wants them to say - unless you speak Arabic.
15. Ecuador's indigenous leaders have vowed to keep up protests over the prospect of a free trade agreement with the US.
16. Libya and France have signed an accord for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
17. At least 300 small farmers have taken over a Swiss-owned experimental farm in Southern Brazil. The farmers say that the Swiss enterprise is ruining the environment.
18. Saddam Hussein - again using his own crimes against humanity trial as a political platform - has asked Iraqis to stop fighting one another and start fighting the occupying forces (I can envision the GOP using a similar platform for the 08 presidential election... )
19. In New York State, the ACLU has been kept busy filing FOIA lawsuits against the government for spying on a wide array of activists groups - churches, animal rights groups, environmental activists... the usual suspects)
