This is a recording of Ross Gelbspan on "The Climate Crisis and What We Can Do to Avert Disaster". He spoke at the Boston Social Forum on July 24, 2004.
What will be the effects of global overheating -- on the natural world, human health, water and food supplies, extreme weather events, sea level, and beyond? Ross Gelbspan claims that climate change is the one issue which, unchecked, will swamp all other issues facing us today.
He is the author of _The Heat is On_, a book about climate change which was published in 1997. In 2004 he followed this with _Boiling Point: How Politicians, Big Oil And Coal, Journalists, And Activists Have Fueled A Climate Crisis -- And What We Can Do To Avert Disaster_. And it was this subject he discussed at the Boston Social Forum.
For thirty-one years, Ross Gelbspan worked as a reporter and editor at a number of newspapers, including _The Philadelphia Bulletin_, _The Washington Post_, and _The Boston Globe_. As special projects editor of _The Boston Globe_, he conceived, directed and edited a series of articles that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1984. His journalistic work on climate change has also appeared widely, including _The Washington Post_, the _Nation_, and _Harper's Magazine_. Among Ross Gelbspan's several books, 1997's _The Heat Is On_ received very positive reviews, and received even more national attention when President Bill Clinton told reporters that he was reading it. Seven years later, Gelbspan wrote _Boiling Point_. The book received the lead review, written by Al Gore, in a _Sunday New York Times Book Review_ that August.
In this talk Ross Gelbspan reports on the wide-ranging effects of global warming, and some of the nefarious dealings of the oil and coal industries to cloud the issue. Finally, he offers a concrete plan for averting a full-blown climate crisis. Addressing climate change could solve many other problems in our social, political, and economic lives.
