Many thought that when the US got involved in Afghanistan, the position of Afghani women would improve. That position is something award-winning journalist and women's rights activist Ann Jones knows a lot about. Soon after the US bombing of the capital, Kabul, she went to the city to bring help where her country had brought destruction. She worked with war widows, retrained English teachers, and investigated the city's prison for women. Her report KABUL IN WINTER: LIFE WITHOUT PEACE IN AFGHANISTAN, chronicles her work there and what she found. Writer's Voice first aired this interview with Jones last year. KABUL IN WINTER is being reissued in paperback in early March. Many new authors, and some established ones, are turning to self-publishing, something we've talked about before on this show. But something we haven't talked about is what are the best companies to print your book and help guide you through the process, and which ones should you avoid? Author and former intellectual property lawyer Mark Levine analyzes and critiques the contracts and services of 48 self-publishing companies in the FINE PRINT OF SELF-PUBLISHING. He tells us what to look for and what to look out for when signing a contract to publish your book.
