This past Friday, December 1, despite the freezing rain, at least 100 supporters from the neighborhood of Pointe-Ste-Charles and all over Montreal gathered at the St-Gabriel Church. For over 11 months Kader Belaouni, a refugee claimant to Canada from Algeria, has been in sanctuary, defying a deportation order from the Canada Border Services Agency. The demonstrators marched from the St-Gabriel Church to the offices of Immigration Canada in downtown Montreal, in an action entitled "Our Community, Our Choice: Status for Kader Now!"
