YESTERDAY, THOUSANDS AROUND THE WORLD CAME TO THE STREETS TO MARCH AND RALLY FOR MUMIA ABU JAMAL, AN AFRICAN AMERICAN JOURNALIST WHO HAS BEEN ON DEATH ROW AT THE SCI GREEN PRISON IN PENNSYLVANIA FOR 26 YEARS FOR THE SHOOTING A PHILADELPHIA POLICIE OFFICER, WHICH THEY SAY WAS A FRAME-UP. MORE DEMONSTRATIONS ARE PLANNED THIS WEEK IN SYDNEY, CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES AND MEXICO CITY.
THE DEFENSE OF MUMIA ABU JAMAL WAS RECENTLY DEALT A BLOW WHEN A THREE-JUDGE PANNEL OF THE PENNSYLVANIA THIRD CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS VOTED TWO-TO-ONE TO DENY HIM A NEW TRIAL DESPITE ADMITTING THAT A POTENTIAL JURY MEMBER WAS DENIED BASED ON HIS SKIN COLOR.
ON SATURDAY, A MARCH AND RALLY IN PHILADELPHIA CALLED BY OVER THREE HUNDRED ORGANIZATIONS, BLOCKED MARKET STREET TRAFFIC FOR HOURS BUT WAS LARGELY PEACEFUL DESPITE REPEATED PROVOCATIONS BY A SMALL RIGHT WING MOTORCYCLE GANG.
