This episode: if thousands of cops had to hang out with thousands of young black people at a party, could they get along? Could they both act as natural as possible given the circumstances? Who's now ordering the police to literally bump into us on crowded sidewalks? How are the police and public handling this potentially awkward situation? When people have to hang out anyway, how do they create the best vibe possible? How do we all stop anybody at the top from being a killjoy so we can all enjoy?
CKLNs Rude Awakening Morning Show is hosted by Vijay Sarma (aka Black Krishna or BK) Mondays to Thursdays from 6 - 7 am; who also hosts CKLNs Word of Mouth Mondays from 7 - 8 pm, on 88.1 FM, Rogers Cable 947 or CKLN.fm online. Police ceremony kicks off Caribana: Officers have float in weekend parade

Henry Stancu | Toronto Star | July 29, 2010

Toronto police will be keeping an eye on Saturday’s Caribana parade and they’ll also be part of it with a colourful float of revelers and dancers swaying to the beat on the street. Since 1991, the police service float has been part of the annual celebration and this year’s theme of “Cultural Fusion” will be carried aboard the brightly decked out trailer named “Diversity in Motion.” “Together we will make sure that Torontonians experience a happy and safe Caribana,” police board chair Alok Mukherjee told community members and special guests at police headquarters Wednesday.

Plan of Attack: Caribana weekend

Ben Kaplan | National Post | July 30, 2010

We met Marsha Sullivan last year at Nadine’s Hair Salon, a bustling studio at 1562 Eglinton Ave. W. in Little Jamaica that stays open all night on Caribana eve. “I’ll be here until five o’clock in the morning and down at the Lake Shore at 10, but I don’t mind,” Sullivan says. “I’m a party animal — Trini to the bone.” Sullivan, 33, is something of a Caribana expert — she’ll be in the parade again this year — and so we picked her brain for the ultimate insider’s guide to the 43rd running of North America’s largest Caribbean celebration of the year.

Caribana brings the summer spirit to Toronto

Rafael Brusilow | The Metro | July 29, 2010

Brimming with energy and colour, the Scotiabank Caribana Parade returns to Toronto with a spirit as triumphant as ever. The colourful celebration of Caribbean culture — featuring pageantry, music and dancing — takes over Lakeshore Blvd. and Exhibition Place this Saturday. Expect plenty of flashy colours, feathers and buff bodies as almost 10,000 participants and more than one million onlookers take to the street to get in the spirit of summer. Parade co-chair Denise Herrera Jackson says the event is all about bringing people of all ages together to celebrate aspects of Caribbean culture. “It’s a tradition that’s about getting together and seeing people just having a good time. I like the fact that we have a festival that is very unique and allows any age group to participate. We have an event that is beautiful and which educates, entertains and engages,” she added.

G20 MARTIAL LAW PART 2? -- Caribana 2009 - 2010 Police Reports and Predictions

Vijay aka BK | Black Krishna Blog | July 30, 2010

FYI, please feel free to re-post this public domain article for free on any blog or website (etc.) and pass it on before this 2010 Caribana Weekend in Toronto. Based on the very early police actions last night, including a huge group of tough but bored-looking black-clad SWAT cops patrolling the empty nightclub district, there may be efforts to step-up the use of police to crackdown on the public like they were ordered to at the G20 Summit. Since many police are upset at being ordered to ignore all the violent anarchists destroying their cop cars and more, many may be somewhat awake to the "new world order" pulling the strings and ready to help resist them with public support.

G20 MARTIAL LAW PART 2? -- Caribana 2010 -- UPDATE 1 -- From Relapse To Recovery

Vijay aka BK | Black Krishna Blog | July 31, 2010

thanks and no prob dood. it was a really chill night, you can ask a thousand other witnesses if you want, but just in case i accidentally brought my own after a conspirienced buddy (i met this dood once last year) joined me at a starbucks in the annex before we headed down to yonge. i had a totally different night planned, but once you find a "good guy" (whitespeak) and cat you can really hang with, you might as well hang, especially since i don't hang that much, so i was in the mood. we had a great time yappin' and walkin' yonge, and while a few hundred cops were there, no matter who the hell you are, you have to admit they were pretty chilled out for what they were ordered to do, which was to kick it right beside the rest of us for absolutely no reason at all.
