The New Nuclear Danger Helen Caldicott As a young pediatrician in Australia, Helen Caldicott learned about the medical consequences of nuclear war. That changed her life. She eventually campaigned in the US for nuclear disarmament. Now, over 30 years later, concerned about the US plans to build more nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors, she has returned with a new book and new plans. Her book is called: The New Nuclear Danger. She hopes to establish an institute to support speakers with expertise in nuclear war, energy, radioactive waste, and nuclear disarmament.
I recorded her at a house party where she began with a very personal account of why, in her early sixties, she has decided to leave her grandchildren and her garden in Sydney, Australia, to go back on the road as public speaker. The new nuclear weapons program, Manhattan Project II, with Star Wars, poses an as yet concealed new danger. Placement in space of weapons designed to exert global control, may force other countries into nuclear defense systems. It also violates the Moon and the Outer Space Treaties, written to prevent any one country from claiming ownership in space.
