Mayor's race too close to call -- Poll

Don Peat | Toronto Sun | October 17, 2010

A new poll shows a surging George Smitherman is still just short of squeezing out Rob Ford to become Toronto’s next mayor unless he can pick up the unlikely support of Joe Pantalone.

The Nanos Research poll released Sunday showed the mayor’s race is still locked in a dead heat between frontrunner Rob Ford and George Smitherman.

The poll found Ford is still slightly out in front among decided voters with 43.9%. Smitherman has gained steadily and is now at 40.5%. Joe Pantalone, the last of the remaining major mayoral candidates, has 15% of decided voters.

Conducted between Thursday and Saturday among 1,000 likely voters, the poll found there is still a large unknown in the race with around 18.5% of voters remaining undecided.
