Prof. Barton has been exploring caves since she was a teenager, but this time she went into the Lechuguilla Cave in Carlsbad Caverns to find bacteria untouched by man. She found antibiotic resistance to all the known medical antibiotics we now use, which led to recognition that 1.Resistance is likely hard-wired into microbes - and 2. Many undiscovered resistances but also new antibiotics await mankind and medicine
