IN THE 1960S AND 70S THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY WAS A VOICE OF POLITICAL RADICALISM IN BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS, BUT THEIR SOCIAL WORK IN THESE COMMUNITIES IS NOT WIDELY PUBLICIZED. A RECENT BOOK BY A COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SOCIOLOGY PROFESSOR, "BODY AND SOUL: THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY AND THE FIGHT AGAINST MEDICAL DISCRIMINATION" DOCUMENTS THE IMPORTANT ADVANCES ACHIEVED BY THE ORGANIZATION IN OUTLINING THE STRUCTURES AND VALUES OF A SOCIALIZED HEALTH SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES.
