Dec. 29, 2012, 8:13 p.m.
Jack Bricker, State Conservationist for the commonwealth visits Lightly on the Ground Host Sunny Gardener to talk about his job and how NRCS works with USDA to provide funds for citizens to achieve their environmentally sound goals. Recorded at the end of 2012 as Congress is deadlocked over spending, including the expansive Farm Bill, at a time when the USDA freed up EQIP funds. We focus on how small farmers can apply!
When this show was made in late December of 2012, the Farm Bill was bogged down in Congress. That means that funding for all the programs covered by this huge piece of quadrennial legislation is on hold. The Farm Bill covers Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, conservation planning, organic certification cost shares, environmental safeguards for farms, as well as subsidies for everyone from working farm families to those for mega-farms and millionaire investors. It is exciting that Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) funds were deemed important enough to be freed up for administration by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Jack Bricker explains what that means for the small farm families of Virginia and the south, including how to apply. During their conversation details emerge as to the kinds of projects this money can potentially support as well as how farm can seek it.
