GLENN GREENWALD SPEAKS OF EDWARD SNOWDEN
AND NSA AT THE CHICAGO SOCIALISM 2013 FORUM

In the latest fallout from the ongoing NSA leaks published by the Guardian and der Spiegel, the European Community is up in arms over today's reports of American and British surveillance of at least 38 European embassies, and the bugging of UN and EU computers, phones and trade delegations engaged in treaty negotiations with Washington.

The European parliament and French President Francois Hollande are demanding explanations and a 'immediate halt' to the NSA/GCHQ operations. But BARACK OBAMA's new State Secretary John Kerry shrugged off the furor, claiming, with apologies to Tom Jones, that "it's not unusual" to tap at any time.

Domestically, new slides released from the NSA's PRISM database indicate that the Obama administration is maintaining real-time surveillance of American emails, logins, logouts, locations and transmissions -- in addition to digital storage of virtually all domestic cellphone and landline calls.

Meanwhile, the diplomatic noose around Edward Snowden tightened significantly overnight, when the now-passport-less whistleblower had a travel document issued by the Ecuadoran embassy in Moscow revoked by President RAFAEL CORREA -- who is facing trade sanctions and other threats against asylum delivered over the weekend by Vice President JOE BIDEN.

Moreover, Russian President VLADIMIR PUTIN added insult to injury, asserting today that if Snowden wants to stay in Russia "he must stop his work aimed at harming our American partners".

Edward Snowden's principles and revelations, and mainstream media's negligence in covering the NSA spy scandal were addressed in great detail over the weekend by Guardian reporter GLENN GREENWALD, keynote speaker for the Socialism 2013 Conference in Chicago [ socialismconference.org/ ].

Greenwald spoke from a foreign location by Skype, very much aware of the irony that Skype is among the many American corporations collaborating with the NSA. Greenwald was introduced by "Dirty War" author JEREMY SCAHILL
