Under the neo-conservative rule of the Tories, Ontario's rates of social assistance were slashed in 1995 and have been fixed ever since, while the minimum wage has been frozen at $6.85/hour. Today, labour and social justice activists stood up to say "it's time for a raise!", with events in 25 cities and towns across the province.
In Toronto, hundreds of flyers were handed out at Yonge and Dundas, the heart of the city's downtown. This recording opens with a speech by Ethel LaValley of the Ontario Federation of Labour. Following that, we spoke with three other people. In the background you can hear the sounds of the city and also bands warming up for tonight's out-door concert for the North by Northeast Music Festival.
