THE DEAD ZONE starring Christopher Walken, Tom Skerritt, Brook Adams and Martin Sheen.
Waking up from a five-year coma after a car accident, former schoolteacher Johnny Smith (Walken) discovers that he can see peopleâs futures and pasts when he touches them. Many consider his talent a gift; Johnny feels cursed. His fiance married another man during his coma and people clamor for him to solve their problems. When Johnny has a disturbing vision after he shakes the hand of an ambitious and amoral politician, he must decide if he should take drastic action to change the future..
The Dead Zone was first published in 1979 and is the only collaboration between Cronenberg and Stephen King. Upon itâs release the film was met with strong reviews and after good word of mouth, became a modest box office hit, doubling itâs 10 million dollar budget. Along with both Walkens performance and Cronenbergs atmospheric directing Michael Kamen was also praised for his rich score. The film won Best Picture at the Saturn awards for Best Horror Film and Cronenberg for best director. To this day many consider itâs Oscar snub a shame.
We also go to bat with our Best and Worst Stephen King adaptations and Adam does his best to defend Maximum Overdrive.
