Phil interviews Stephen Gowans about the attempted coup in Venezuela. Gowans described the U.S. president and mainstream media as delusional, in that they promote themselves as champions of “democracy.”

Actually, the USA promotes dictatorships, and tries to overthrow governments run by socialists or by leaders who govern in the interests of their own people, rather than those of US investors. The US has consequently slapped punitive sanctions on Venezuela to harm the Venezuelan people – systematic economic warfare – to the point that they will rebel against their government. Then, they blame the Venezuelan government for “economic mismanagement.”

Gowans notes that the Canadian government has been practicing something called “quiet diplomacy.” It is really clandestine support for the opposition in Venezuela. As Linda McQuaig pointed out, the Canadian government is involved in class warfare in Venezuela on the side of the rich.

Gowans calls on political analysts commenting on the situation in Venezuela to recognize that their main focus should be that Venezuela is a sovereign state in which only the Venezuelan people have the right to determine their own leaders.
