Speakers represent Let Us Breath Collective, Black Abolitionist Network and Chicago Torture Justice Center.
Five years earlier the Let Us Breath Collective and Black Lives Matter setup a tent community in an empty lot across from the Chicago Police Department warehouse at Homan and Fillmore after hearing reports of children and adults be held off the books by police. Prisoners were hidden from their lawyers and family, denied access to lawyers and a phone and as you will hear bathrooms. Former Mayor Rahm Emanuel and current Mayor Lightfoot have refused to close the facility or enforce the laws requiring that prisoners be registered and allowed access to a lawyer. Called a "black site" in a Guardian Newspaper expose, local lawyers disputed that claim. Nothing that transpired at Homan was any different than what happens at any other police station in Chicago they claimed. Speakers are calling for de-funding the police. The #3 demand in the BAN list of demands is for the City Council to pass the Civilian Police Accountability Council Ordnance, CPAC.
The protest took place ahead of Trumps threat to bring Federal Goons into Chicago to stop the on going protests that followed George Floyd's murder by Minneapolis police. This black lead movement intends to end police impunity and the racist policing that accompanies it. They were not intimidated and were joined at the rally by many white and Latinx supporters who later marched through the neighborhood..
Damon's talk starts late and the last speaker an Alderman was not recorded. A cultural program followed that demonstrated how its the community that provides actual safety.
