After initial remarks, we spend the rest of our time on the air with our guest, Peter Schumann, founder and director of the Bread & Puppet Theater. Mr.Shumann was born in Silesia, an area now within the borders of Poland. He was a sculptor and dancer in Germany before moving to the United States in 1961. In 1963 he founded Bread & Puppet in New York City, and in 1970 moved the troupe to Vermont, where it still performs. Mr. Schumann has brought puppetry to Palestine twice, staying in Beit Sahour, in the municipality of Bethlehem, during one visit, and in Ramallah during the second visit. He joins us by telephone from his home in Vermont.
The Bread & Puppet Theater is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in this country. The Theater is now an internationally recognized company that champions a visually rich, street-theater brand of performance art. Its shows are political and spectacular, with huge puppets made of papier-mache and cardboard, a brass band for accompaniment, and anti-elitist dances. At most performances, the company distributes bread and aioli (garlic sauce) to the audience. Most shows are morality plays, with an overall theme of universal peace.
