This segment of "If Music Could talk" explores the many samples from Indian music in Hip Hop-- some of these tracks arent exactly new, but many don't realize how MANY hip hop songs contain Indian samples.. - ( following Timbaland's habit of bhangra and bolly-sampling, producers of dance rhythms for Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake also sampled Indian music, although I couldnt locate the songs- mustve been buried pretty deep in the mix)
it's cool that all these beat-makers and MCs are stepping out of the genres of soul and funk and jazz to get samples for their tracks.. but if you decide to sample an Indian music track-- you still need to credit the original artists, and PLEASE dont refer to the Indian singer as an "Arabic chick" (listen to "React" by Erick Sermon and Redman) or confuse bellydancing with Indian dance (see Truth Hurts' Addictive video)
here's a pretty cool article from way back, from the village voice? www.villagevoice.com/2003-07-01/news/mix-this/
