The REAL motto of the Pentagon, VA, & White House has been not "Support . . . " but rather "F**k the Troops!" Journalist Glantz explains the ways they do so. Fighting troops are treated shoddily, injured troops (no longer useful to them) worse, and veterans worst of all. Hence all the suicides, homelessness, & untreated PTSD. Then I show that this has been true for a century, with a recording from 1971 and a reading from Smedley Butler
Glantz talk excerpted from a recording broadcast on "Mind Over Matters." Thanks to producer Mike McCormick. 1971 Senate testimony by VVAW spokesperson John Kerry courtesy of democracynow.org. Thanks to Amy Goodman & staff. "New World Notes" is produced for WWUH-FM, "Public Alternative Radio," at the University of Hartford. Feedback to kdowst at hotmail dot com.
Major General Smedley Butler's fine pamphlet "War is a Racket" (1935) is available free from several sources on the World Wide Web. One good one is http://www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/warisaracket.html, which offers the text in HTML, ASCII, or pdf.

"Thanks, and a tip 'o the hat to . . . " cartoonist Jimmy Hatlo ("They'll Do It Every Time," "Little Iodine").

Photographs, graphics, and commentary complement the story. See them in the newsletter or on the blog--http://newworldnotes.blogspot.com . Permanent link to this installment's blog entry -- http://newworldnotes.blogspot.com/2009/06/support-troops.html.
