In educating students, U.S. public schools range from mediocre down to soul-destroying. Others, like J Kozol, G Carlin and A Huxley, have argued the same. But Gatto gives a detailed account of WHY. Why? The Ruling Elite wanted obedient factory workers & easily-manipulated, childlike consumers. Compulsory public schooling has created both for a century. A brilliant, well-researched, persuasive & witty speech!
New World Notes is produced for WWUH-FM, Public Alternative Radio at the University of Hartford. Feedback to kdowst at hotmail dot com.
Not just a crackpot, Gatto was a master high-school teacher with 3 "Teacher of the Year" awards from New York City and one from New York State. Since quitting the profession, he has written books and given lectures, attempting to show Americans that their system of compulsory public schooling is designed to produce social control, not education.

I condensed roughly the first third of Gatto's October 2003 speech for this installment. The complete speech, as broadcast by Radio for Peace International (RFPI), may be downloaded free on Gatto's Web site: www.johntaylorgatto.com . RFPI mistakenly dates the recording to 2001, and a different version of the speech (also available on the Internet) may indeed have been recorded in 2001. This version, though, is from late 2003--Gatto briefly discusses the U.S. land invasion of Iraq.

SUMMARIZING GATTO -- My 2-minute summary of Gatto's argument in this part of his speech is found about 16.5 minutes into the mp3. Gatto has written a short, profusely illustrated article that nicely summarizes his overall main ideas & main arguments--the "American Education History Tour." www.johntaylorgatto.com/historytour/history1.htm

SONG-- The Foremen, "California Wouldn't Pay Our Education"

Photos, drawings, links, & additional commentary supplement this installment. See them at our Web site (blog)--http://newworldnotes.blogspot.com . SERIES OVERVIEW -- Political and social commentary in a variety of genres. Exploring the gap between what we want ... and what they're trying to make us settle for. "Date recorded" = date of first scheduled broadcast.
