Her $1.99 bottle of dish soap was accompanied by a 13-cent âeco fee.â The levy for thousands of new products, from pharmaceuticals to fire extinguishers, quietly came into effect July 1, the same day as the harmonized sales tax. But unlike that tax, provincial agencies have done little to publicize the new fees, catching consumers like Colorado by surprise. âIâve never heard anything about this fee. No oneâs talking about it,â she said. âThe fact they just put it without us knowing, I donât think itâs honest. I donât like it.â

On Friday, news broke that a hacker had broken in to the computer systems used by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia in Britain, obtaining more than 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents. The material, which covers a period of more than a decade, has led many to conclude that climate scientists associated with the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and various government agencies have been cooking the books to make the case for man-made global warming.
More than 31,000 scientists have signed a petition denying that man is responsible for global warming.

The academics, including 9,000 with PhDs, claim that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane are actually beneficial for the environment. The petition was created in 1998 by an American physicist, the late Frederick Seitz, in response to the Kyoto Protocol a year earlier. It urged the US government to reject the treaty and said: "The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind."

A CIA think tank has produced a strategy paper for President Barrack Obama on how to manipulate public opinion in NATO countries on the war in Afghanistan. Recent public opinion polls show that in all the European NATO countries the majority is against continuing the Afghan war. Just recently the coalition government in The Netherlands fell when the Labour Party withdrew its support over the decision to continue its military role in Afghanistan. The CIA and the U.S. government fear that this might encourage other governments to follow suit and start âlistening to the voters.â The classified confidential Red Cell Special Memorandum, dated March 11, 2010, was published by Wikileaks. The âCIA Report into Shoring Up Afghan War Support in Europeâ reveals particular concerns about France and Germany, where 80% of the population has indicated opposition to the war in recent polls. The report recommends that in its public relations effort the U.S. administration emphasize the restrictions on womenâs rights under the Taliban government when addressing the French people. In Germany it should be argued that the cessation of the Afghan war could increase the influx of heroin, refugees and potential terrorists.
