ASSANGE SEEKS ECUADOR ASYLUM
In a startling escape from house arrest two weeks before his court-ordered extradition to Sweden, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange materialized overnight at the Ecuador embassy in London, where he formally petitioned for political asylum. So far, under diplomatic protection, he has evaded a new arrest for parole violation, which could obstruct his potential flight to Ecuador and ultimately bring him to the US, where some believe a sealed indictment for espionage awaits him.
