First They Came for the Journalists and the Academics! The Sun Now Setting on Democracy as We Know It.

Oct. 18, 2024, 1:58 a.m.
This week, on the Global Research News Hour, concerns are starting to be raised about more and more journalists, activists and even scholars who are having their lives disrupted in the wake of detentions, arrests, and even outright suppression of rights as the cancer of anti-terrorism laws grows to the point of targeting almost anyone who voices concerns as we have on the show about the NATO instigated Ukraine War, opposition to the genocidal campaign waged by Israel and more. This show features an array of guests with dissenting views on foreign policy in Canada and abroad facing such measures and some analysis of what can be done to reverse this trend. Conversations with journalists Eva Bartlett and Vanessa Beeley, and with academics Tamara Lorincz, Radhika Desai and Kevin Mackay.

Commentary - Early industrial organizing success '37

Oct. 17, 2024, 9:06 p.m.
Phil explains why we need to get our facts straight about the early success of industrial organizing involving the CIO and UAW. The new book by UNIFOR activist Tony Leah, "The Truth About The '37 Oshawa GM Strike" (Baraka Books) gets us back on track. The approach was class struggle and real international solidarity, a strategy now being taken up by a dedicated reform movement in the UAW. Speaking of neglected facts, Phil T. touts another book, "Einstein on Israel and Zionism" by Fred Jerome (also Baraka Books). It reveals that the great scientist argued long and hard over the years against Zionist extremism, and the need for dialogue and cooperation with the anti-colonial movement of the Arab peoples. He even went to the lengths of personally seeking out close personal ties with Arab journalists and intellectuals. He condemned Menachem Begin for his violent conduct and fascism.

Nuclear War - Annie Jacobsen’s Reasons for Peace

Oct. 16, 2024, 1:33 a.m.
The investigative journalist and acclaimed author, specializing in weapons and war, Annie Jacobsen, has come closer than other investigators to the razor edge of secrecy that surrounds the current nuclear war machine. Her book, Nuclear War, is based on hundreds of interviews with war planners and engineers - plus recently declassified documents. Annie Jacobsen, reminds us that a Doomsday killing machine has been designed, capable of destroying not just two cities but life on this planet - first with fire and heat and then seven to ten years of darkness and ice sheets from nuclear winter. Annie Jacobsen’s book, Nuclear War, A Scenario, has 373 pages of interviews and sources, but it covers only 72 minutes of real time. Beginning at zero hour with the launch of one rogue nuclear missile - in Jacobsen’s scenario from North Korea - that will hit the Pentagon only 38 minutes later and destroy all of Washington DC. Here is the question and answer section of an interview by tech writer Quentin Hardy for the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. Watch the full one hour video of this conversation on the YouTube channel of the Commonwealth Club. The title is Annie Jacobsen | Nuclear War DATE: 2024/03/27

Oct. 15, 2024, 11:35 p.m.
Death is a topic that most of us prefer not to think too much about. While we must all acknowledge its inevitability, on a day-to-day basis, it feels better to keep it up on a shelf in a box, out of reach from quotidian life. Then again, there are decisions to be made, and they really do need to be made in advance of those inexorable metamorphic events. This week on Sea Change Radio, we learn about the burgeoning green funeral industry from the CEO and Founder of Recompose, Katrina Spade. We look at the environmental problems associated with conventional burial and cremation, hear about the rather unusual modern history of embalming in the US, and go deep on the subject of human composting.
