Presence is what Nico was about. She had worked the catwalk and she knew how to grab attention just by standing still. Her voice at first was such a contrast to that lovely face, but as the years passed she transformed into her greatest role, the Junkie Priestess of Punk, and her voice was by then total perfection. She was loved for her story and that voice and her songs.
Produced and engineered by dj bennett (chillroom@killradio.org)

Biographical material from Nico, The Life and Lies of an Icon by Richard Witts (London: Virgin Publishing 1993), Whats Welsh for Zen? by John Cale (London: Melody Maker 2000), White Light/White Heat The Velvet Underground Day by Day by Richie Unterberger (London: Jawbone Press 2009). Special thanks to Michael Sheppard who stayed with it to the end. Thanks to Humberto and Vanya and Duffy. This program is presented for education and entertainment. Comments are necessary, please.

160k, two and a quarter hours, the lives and music of Nico

Tonight I am telling Nico's story with the music, which will stand the test of time. Her first album, Chelsea Girl, the most "normal" of her records, is also her best known, and those songs have made it to hit film soundtracks even. I only play one song from Chelsea Girl, the one that most predicts her future. But here you will find her great album tracks and rare singles and guest appearances, to I hope help you know who this wonderful, fascinating lady was. I loved Nico. I hope you shall, too.

Set list, all tracks by Nico with various artists: Lawns of Dawns (from The Marble Index 1969) / Introduction / from La Dolce Vita 1959: Marcello and Nico / Strip-Tease (with Serge Gainsbourg 1962) / (the 1965 Immediate single) I'm Not Sayin' / The Last Mile / There She Goes Again (Velvet Underground rehearsal 3 January 1966) / I'll Keep It with Mine (Velvet Underground rehearsal 7 March 1966) / All Tomorrow's Parties (7" edit, with Velvets 1966) / I'll Be Your Mirror (7" mix, with Velvets 1966) / Sunday Morning (7" mix, with Velvets 1966) / All Tomorrow's Parties (4 November 1966 Columbus Ohio with Velvets) / Eulogy to Lenny Bruce (from Chelsea Girl 1967) / Frozen Warnings (from The Marble Index 1969) / Afraid (from Desertshore 1970) / All That Is My Own (from Desertshore 1970) / Irreversible Neural Damage (collaboration with Kevin Ayers, from Confessions of Dr. Dream 1974) / Das Lied der Deutchen (from The End... 1974) / Interview with Nico (undated, roughly 81-82) / Sixty Forty (Drama of Exile 1981) / Vegas (single 1981) / Chelsea Girls (from Chelsea Hotel documentary 1982) / New York, New York (from video for Squat Theater production Mr Dead and Mrs Free 1982) / My Funny Valentine (from Camera Obscura 1985) / Your Kisses Burn (collaboration with Marc Almond, from The Stars We Are 1988) / Femme Fatale (Bataclan Club Paris 29 January 1972) / No One Is There (Bataclan Club Paris 29 January 1972)
