With all of the current discussion around Greece, the crippling economic austerity being forced upon its people by international creditors and banks, the loss of pensions and jobs, the cutting of public services, and the selling off of public assets to wealthy oligarchs, what goes unmentioned is that all of this is part of the normal functioning of the capitalist system which is based on the accumulation and expansion of profit at any cost. As Michael Parenti has pointed out, the motto of the capitalist is "we have a lot, we can get more, we want it all". So when we look across the globe, we see Puerto Rico - an impoverished colony of the American Empire - transformed into a offshore tax haven which is now on the verge of economic collapse. We see vast numbers of migrant workers coming from Mexico to North America to find jobs because the economy of their own country has been restructured to serve the needs of multi-national corporations at the expense of the people, resulting in desperate poverty. We see workers in India who, even with higher incomes than one decade ago, consume less calories per day and face chronic malnutrition because they must pay for essential services that were once free but are now privatized. Capitalism always wants more and it does not care about people. It is the vampire that sucks the blood of humanity.
