Picks And Shovels by Cory Doctorow, with Yanis Varoufakis

Feb. 19, 2025, 1:24 a.m.
David Moscrop invited Cory Doctorow and Yanis Varoufakis to a conversation. They discuss how the concentration of wealth and power and surveillance is made possible by the internet where someone like Elon Musk uses digital power to determine the outcome of an election, and then proceeds to dismantle democratic institutions. Cory Doctorow is a Canadian-British blogger, journalist, science fiction author and activist. Doctorow had just announced that his most recent book: Picks And Shovels was going into distribution. Picks & Shovels is the origin story of the most powerful new tool for crime ever invented: the personal computer. Yanis Varoufakis is an economist, former Finance Minister of Greece and author of Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism. Technofeudalism is the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world, and is the greatest current threat to our efforts to avert climate catastrophe — and to democracy itself. Please go to YouTube and search for the one hour version of this rebellious and intriguing conversation. It’s on the Jacobin channel under the title: Picks And Shovels by Cory Doctorow, with Yanis Varoufakis DATE: Feb. 15, 2025

Scott Hechinger: We (Still) Have Rights!

Feb. 18, 2025, 10:21 p.m.
An implicit assumption within the structure of the American justice system is the notion that punishment is productive. Research shows, however, that locking people up does not address the underlying causes for most criminal behavior -- in fact it actually exacerbates the likelihood of reoffending. With 95% of incarcerated people expected to reenter our communities, it seems pretty clear that our punitive practices are decidedly unproductive. This week on Sea Change Radio, we welcome back to the show Scott Hechinger, a civil rights lawyer, former public defender, and the current Executive Director of the nonprofit advocacy group, Zealous. We talk about the set of informational films that his organization has recently produced, discuss the fight that lies ahead for immigrants, and look at the measures that are being taken by the current federal administration to push for more capital punishment.

Time to wake up, be a nation among nations

Feb. 18, 2025, 4:19 a.m.
Time to wake up, be a nation among nations; follow Mexico, a veteran of sharp encounters with Yankee power; throw Doug Ford's "Fortress AM-CAN" overboard and adopt a new course with our North American partner in courage, Mexico, and call it MEXI-CAN. Mexico is not a NATO predator, sweating to pay dues for imperialist aggression and is now making a Mexican car workers can afford. Take a lesson, Canada. President Claudia Sheinbaum declares the people come first, especially the poor. Let us say the same in Canada. The U.S. uses "aid" to subvert other countries and they say so openly. South Africa is now being targeted because they are beginning the long promised land reform and have taken Israel to the International Court of Justice for genocide and war crimess. Kendrick Lamar was the cultural MVP of the Super Bowl, revealing to millions the other and real America, that Trump and company deny exists. Trump bullied and mocked Taylor Swift, but was silent about the great half-time show. He's afraid of Lamar.

Thomas Jefferson Pt. II

Feb. 16, 2025, 5:23 p.m.
Thomas Jefferson—writer of the Declaration of Independence, founding father, and king of contradictions. In this episode, Eric Mason and Kyle break down the messy reality of his presidency, from his high-minded ideals to his economic and diplomatic faceplants. Spoiler: for a guy who hated big government, he sure loved using executive power when it suited him. Let’s talk about the Embargo Act of 1807, Jefferson’s boldest move that was supposed to stick it to Britain and France but instead tanked the U.S. economy—especially in New England, where people were not amused. Then there’s the Barbary Wars, where Jefferson, who supposedly loathed standing armies, suddenly had zero problem using military force. And don’t forget the Jay Treaty and Treaty of San Lorenzo, which shaped America’s early trade policies and secured access to the Mississippi River (because, let’s be real, without it, we were screwed). Oh, and his never-ending beef with Alexander Hamilton? Yeah, that played a major role in shaping America’s financial system. Add in some international chaos, an escalating conflict with Britain, and Jefferson somehow managing to push the U.S. closer to war while claiming neutrality, and you’ve got a presidency that was anything but consistent.

TWIP-250216

Feb. 16, 2025, 4:05 p.m.
Forcing people out of their own country can be considered a war crime under international law. The Fourth Geneva Convention and Additional Protocol I explicitly prohibit the deportation or transfer of civilians from an occupied territory, unless there are compelling military reasons, or the security of the civilians involved demands it. This prohibition is also reflected in the Statute of the International Criminal Court, which states that the deportation or transfer of the population of an occupied territory constitutes a war crime in international armed conflicts. Forced displacement can have severe consequences for individuals and communities, affecting their lives, health, and well-being. International law provides numerous safeguards against forced displacement, and efforts are made to prevent and mitigate its adverse effects.

Island of Truth in a Sea of Propaganda. Israel-Gaza. War in Ukraine

Feb. 16, 2025, 5:02 a.m.
Donate to fundrive.ckuw.ca So on this week’s episode, we are putting the focus on the work we do along side numerous people attempting to speak the unspoken truth of war. In the first half hour, we spend time talking to Yusuf Omar of Seen.tv. He is a former war correspondent working for CNN who came to understand the unique contributions that Palestinians can make in Gaza by telling their own stories with a cell phone camera, and at a time when Palestinian journalists are dying by the scores in order to communicate to the outside world. He is to present films by Bisan Owda and Ahmad Ghunaim to audiences across Canada and the United States in the coming week. This interview is followed by one with Ramsey Zeid, a Palestinian-Canadian activist in Winnipeg, talking about aspects of the Genocide in Palestine not spoken about in mainstream media outlets, including the challenges and the rewards of activism. Finally, two former guests, Canadian peace activists, Glenn Michalchuk and Tamara Lorincz, speak about some of the more persistent lies and persistent activism to turn the tide toward a more stable and just world. This show is part of radio station CKUW’s Fundrive, encouraging listeners to contribute what they can to keep an island of truth-telling less isolated in an ocean of propaganda.
