Nuclear War and the Devastating Power of Nuclear Weapons

When Penguin Random House prepared the release of Annie Jacobsen’s most recent book: Nuclear War, A Scenario; for early 2024, they did not anticipate that it would appear at a time of heightened risk of a nuclear war.
The risks include casual threats of the use of nuclear weapons over Ukraine or in the Middle East; as well as the actual attacks or threats to the nuclear plants in Ukraine and Russia.
Annie Jacobsen’s book is based on dozens of exclusive interviews with military and civilian experts who built the modern nuclear weapons and launch systems.
Annie Jacobsen and Professor Steven Starr explain how nuclear weapons and the highly automated systems that set them off, have become so much more deadly than in the early 1990s, when we thought we had ended the Cold War.
Professor Steven Starr teaches the class: Environmental, Health and Social Effects of Nuclear Weapons at the University of Missouri. His most recent book is: Nuclear High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse: A Mortal Threat to the U.S. Power Grid and U.S. Nuclear Power Plants.

The first part of today’s show covers the confessions made by one of the officers responsible for murdering Tyre Nichols. We examine his testimony where he comes clean about his abuse of power and his violation of Tyre’s human rights. We discuss the systemic nature of problems like these and the implications felt throughout marginalized communities.
In the second part of the show, we discuss whether or not Africans were kidnapped and forced into slavery. The fact that Africans were sold into slavery is well documented but due to an effort from historical conservative forces, the fact that many Africans were kidnapped often goes undiscussed. We lean on a content creator @levertthebassman to get our dialogue started.
Our Way Black History Fact highlights the other ways (besides purchasing) that White slavers obtained African slaves.

David Ebershoff — "How Many Wives are Enough?"

Polygamy used to be a central aspect in Mormon beliefs. However, it has not been for over 100 years now, due partly to considerable effort by Ann Eliza Young, one of Brigham Young’s many wives. In this edition of Radio Curious we visit with David Ebershoff, the author of “The 19th Wife”, recorded on August 29, 2008. “The 19th Wife,” is the story of Ann Eliza Young, and her realization and then quest to let the world know that marriage should only pertain to two people, instead of one man and a plethora of wives who were referred to as “sister wives.” We discuss what marriage is, how religion plays a large role in many people’s lives, and how the quest that Ann Eliza had effected her world and the world we live in today. Our conversation began when I asked David Ebershoff why Ann Eliza wanted to apostate (or leave without approval) from the Mormon Church in relationship to the politics then and now.
The book that David Ebershoff recommends is, “American Wife: A Novel” by Curtis Sittenfeld.
